Musician/Band of the Month Every month we present a musician or a band in stage light at the moment - by reason of a recent CD release, a concert tour, a jubilee or an award. South Frisco Jazz Band The South Frisco Jazz Band is one of the longest existing bands in Jazz: Founded in 1956 by some jazz enthusiasts during their high school days, they started playing at local coffee houses, then moving on the jazz clubs in the bay area and the whole state of California. Finally, the musicians were invited to play nearly every important festival throughout the USA, and then also to Europe and Japan. Musically, the SFJB is quite tipical "West Coast trad", showing influences of their heros Lu Watters and Turk Murphy, among others. Their unique speciality is their two-cornet-sound in the tradition of King Oliver-Louis Armstrong. In spite of their Band name, no member actually lives in San Francisco... Unfortunately the South Frisco Jazz Band has disbanded not long ago after a very long musical life of nearly 45 years. What remains of them is a lot of fine records, the best ones being in the Stomp Off label (and therefore those CDs can be ordered through Downtown Records). And there is one more good news: The Yerba Buena Stompers (also on Stomp Off) keep up the musical ideas of the SFJB:
